Help, to do with bikes for my twins science project?

My twin girl, Ashley and Karen are doing a project, (YR7), see and I am hopeless at bikes and things like that. So I was hoping anyone knew, why would you lubricate the bike brakes and the chain. Oh and one more thing, their father is away and he's the one with all the bike things in his head. Thanks if you find time to answer my question
