Are Muslims in the West protected from their own religion by Western laws?

I asked before about the punishment for apostasy in Islam being death, and the responses I got from Muslims ranged from denial to pathetic rationalizations but a couple of them seemed to imply that, ‘that only goes on in the less socially advanced areas of the Middle East.’ So does this mean that Muslims living in the West are more likely to admit they’re having doubts about the Islamic belief system because they know they’re not going to get beheaded or stoned to death?
